The Prayer Leader

What is a Prayer Coordinator, Pastor of Prayer, Prayer Leader? Does your congregation have someone specifically dedicated to leading the congregation in directed, focused prayer? Many do not. Prayer is either loosely embraced or is divided into several parts of the ministry. If the prayer movement taught us anything it emphasized that prayer is the prerequisite of revival. Prayer empowers us and is often the first step in carrying out our faith and how we commune with God. It is how we learn to pursue obedience to God's word and learn his voice. It sounds simple and the concept of individual prayer is, but forming a culture of prayer in a congregation and learning how to use it strategically requires focus, direction, and leadership. Why is this needed as an intentional and focused effort?

1. It declares and reinforces that prayer is a priority to the church. It is the first thing that is needed in carrying out the will of God. It is the biblical example of putting God first and seeking his will.

2. It creates a continual, consistent awareness of the prayer ministry and its value in the function in the congregation's mission corporately and individually.

3. It establishes prayer ministry as an imperative to the work of God and reinforces the sanctity of prayer as a vital component to spiritual growth.

For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations (Is 56:7). God gave us his purpose and decreed that we are to be known by prayer. Prayer puts our lifestyle and relationship with God on display for the world to see. In order to maintain this witness, it is important to have a mission statement that defines this unique ministry:

Example-Mission Statement:

As a prayer ministry we are dedicated to hearing, seeking, and speaking the will of God so that we can:

  • Connect people to God so that they can experience his miraculous presence through the ministry of transformative prayer. To ignite passion and purpose for the advancement of the Kingdom.

  • Teach and lead the congregation corporately and individually to seek God first and submit to his will in all things. (Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven Matt 6:10)

  • Help others embrace prayer as a lifestyle and a vital expression of faith and action.

  • Equip the congregation to engage in spiritual warfare.
